Mochi is an ancient Japanese food dating back to 14,000-300 BCE. Its cultural significance is rooted in Japanese traditions, symbolizing good luck, health, and longevity. Mochi has many varieties— a well-known one being glutinous rice pounded into a chewy cake. Because there are many kinds of mochi, mochi has become defined more for its texture (soft, chewy, sticky) than for its ingredients.

While mochi is primarily associated with Japan, rice cakes can also be found in other Asian cultures, such as Korean tteok and Chinese nian gao.

Today, mochi is used in a variety of creations: Hawaiian butter mochi, mochi ice cream, mochi donuts, mochi pancakes, mochi waffles, mochi muffins, mochi gummy candies, mochi tarts, mochi pizza, mochi rice crispy treats, mochi cereal, mochi cornbread, and more.
